Stick’s and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” The famous nursery rhyme Sticks and Stones is meant to increase a child’s resiliency by implying that physical pain is worse than emotional, psychological, or spiritual pain. The concept was to dismiss the impact that words have on us.

In theory, this sounds great, and the truth is, part of this could be true…

The nursery rhyme came about to help children build resiliency. The challenge with this is that words have an energy to them, and it’s the energy that affects us more than we realize. What we can do to lessen the energy of the words from others is to understand that a problem is never the problem. The problem is the meaning we give it. So, in this context, sticks and stones would only hurt if we gave meaning to the words OR to the person who was using them.
